In a recent New York Times article titled "To Save Monarch Butterflies, They Had to Silence the Lawn Mowers" by Hilary Howard, the dedication of Robyn Elman, Frank Coniglio, and Patti Cooper in New York City is highlighted. These three individuals championed the cause of monarch butterflies, understanding the vital role milkweed plays as the sole nourishment for the monarch caterpillars.

Amidst the urban sprawl, Elman's journey began with the distressing sight of mown-down milkweed habitats. Milkweed, essential for the monarch life cycle, serves as the primary food source for their caterpillars and provides a site for the butterflies to lay their eggs. Recognizing this vital relationship, her commitment drew her to Coniglio, an experienced city highway maintenance head, and Cooper, another fervent supporter. Their combined efforts have safeguarded roughly 20 monarch havens in Queens and the Bronx, exemplifying how nature can flourish even within urban confines with dedication and collaboration. Their story underscores the immense impact of local, passion-driven endeavors on conservation.

In recognition of their outstanding dedication to a vulnerable species, we are honored to designate Elman, Coniglio, and Cooper as Earth Clinic Heroes. Their story underlines the impactful difference that dedicated individuals can make, even amid sprawling urban settings.
